Welcome to Global Mapper Tutorial. In this article, we will show you how to create DEM using Global Mapper. We will generate the DEM (Digital Elevation Model) from a contour layer. Global Mapper is capable to generate some spatial analysis such as generate DEM. We can use point or contour data as long as there is an elevation column in the table/layer. For this purpose, I already have a contour file with elevation information in it. Let’s start.
Steps to Create DEM from Contour using Global Mapper
Step 1. Prepare the data
Before we can create DEM, make sure that we have the elevation column in the contour layer. Open the contour layer in Global Mapper.
Step 2. Set the Correct Projection
It is recommended to use the projected coordinate system. You can change or configure the projection via Tools >> Configure >> Projection.
Step 3. Create the Elevation Grid
To start the process, go to Analysis >> Create Elevation Grid from 3D Vector/LiDar Data. The Grid Creation Options window will open up. Select the contour layer and the vertical unit.
We can choose the automatic grid spacing or specify it manually. In this example, I choose the manual grid spacing. You can also check other options if you need them. The default value should works. Click OK and then the process will start.
You can then display the elevation grid in 3D view
