I have been using QGIS for the last few years. Mostly, I use it on my Windows machine and sometime on my Ubuntu Linux. I also able to run QGIS on my macOS Catalina which is great. Now I run the new macOS 11 Big Sur (still in Developer Beta version). I am planning to use QGIS 3.14 on this new macOS. The question now, can I install QGIS 3.14 on macOS 11 Big Sur? Well, we will find out together.
First, let’s download the latest version of QGIS 3.14 for macOS. It is distributed in DMG file format which is great. The installation should be similar to any other DMG file installation.

The copying process took a while because I am not using SSD for my Big Sur Hackintosh. But that should be fine.

Finally, I can install and run QGIS 3.14 on my macOS 11 Big Sur Hackintosh. It runs pretty smooth and hopefully it wont crash very often.
Hi i did exactly as your steps were but weren’t able to open QGIS. apple says it malware and when i overide in the system securty with “open aways” it just gives me the same malware error. Can you give more steps on how you handled the OS update? I think QGIS doesnt want to open in big sur
HI, try this.
Open the Applications folder using Finder. Find QGIS icon. Right-click on it and choose open.
Hope that help
Thanks! Dunno why that works but it does.
Magic… It worked on mine after this step.
Thanks alot!
Yep, thats what i did, and it keeps on saying:
“QGIS” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software.
This software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information.
then i got to secuirty and tell it to “open aways” but the same thing happens again.
Thank you for the quick reply! I’m trying to use QGIS for my project due this week
Hi I am sorry but I never had that problem before. Maybe worth redownloading the qgis package.
I also have the same problem as Brian H Tam. It is not allowing me to open QGIS. absolutely the same message. Would be obliged for guidance to resolve this.
PS. I have tried with QGIS 3.1 and also 3.16.
Hi, to solve this, Open Finder and then go to Applications. Right-click QGIS and click Open.
I had the same problem on Big Sur. Solution:
Go to security and privacy
Click the lock and open it
Click open anyway
Boom! You can open it
Daniel Anderson,
Just one pedantic, minor thing to add to make this clear…
When in Big Sur, after having attempted to open the QGIS.app and having got the the following error:
‘“QGIS” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software.
This software needs to be updated. Contact the developer for more information.’
Then, as you say, go to System Preferences>>Security & Privacy, click the lock and open, BUT then click on “”General “” tab.
It’s only on that tab that you’ll see under the divider (bottom half of panel) the two radio buttons for “Allow apps downloaded from” “App store” or “App store and identified developers” (my setting has the latter clicked). Its only there that you’ll see the option “QGIS.app Open Anyway”, and you’ll only see that if you’ve attempted and failed to open the App.
Sorry, great advice but I normally use my Security and Privacy System Preferences on the Privacy tab, so I couldn’t see this option. Hope this makes your great advice even clearer.
