QGIS is another free GIS software that available for Windows, Mac and also Linux. Today, I am going to show you how to open Mapinfo TAB file on QGIS. QGIS supports many GIS file formats including Mapinfo TAB file. We can easily load the Mapinfo table into QGIS as a layer. We can edit and update the table directly from QGIS. I know this tutorial maybe useless for you who know well about QGIS or Mapinfo. But, back to a few years ago, when I get started with some GIS software at that time, it was really hard to get a great tutorial to follow. I was a total newbie and could not afford any paid course. So, I hope this simple tutorial could help anyone to start QGIS.
Steps to open Mapinfo TAB file on QGIS
I assume you have QGIS installed on your system. If not, you can easily download the Windows installer or follow the steps to install QGIS on Ubuntu Linux. Now, open QGIS Desktop and navigate to Layer | Add layer | Add vector layer. The open window will open up. Make sure you select File on the Source type.
Next, click Browse button and choose your Mapinfo Tab file.
Click Open and now you should see the Mapinfo table is loaded on your QGIS workspace.
At this point, we have successfully opened the Mapinfo table file into QGIS. Next, you can save this file into another format, save it as layer definition file and many more. When we imported Mapinfo table to QGIS, the table attributes will also be imported. The original projection information will also remain the same.
